The Travel Chronicle

Kilimanjaro

For some, “adventure travel” means kayaking down Kilimanjaro.  For other people, it means venturing out from their all inclusive resort long enough to buy some bracelets at the local craft stand.  If neither of these descriptions applies to you, welcome to the travel site for the rest of us – the perfect place for sensible adventurers to find travel information, inspiration, and tips.

Craft Stand

This blog site is the labor of love of two members of that great middle ground of travelers. We don’t camp out, but might consider RVing someday.  We sometimes pack a lunch, but love great restaurants.  We try to make use of all our timeshare weeks, but there’s nothing better than a five star hotel – except for a roadside inn when you’re too tired to drive.  Our travel plans generally involve a road trip or a “fly drive”, as we prefer to find our own way around (what I call wandering around in the car), but you can also find us on a cruise ship, or out tramping with a local guide.

Each of the travel websites that branch off from The Travel Chronicle (TTC) contains more photos than your typical travel guide, but offers a lot more content than a straight photo blog.  We won’t burden you with too many details about restaurants and places to stay, partly because that information gets dated too quickly (but please feel free to ask).  Our primary goal is to give you a sense of place; a feel for the character and essence of a particular destination.

Please allow for the fact that traveling during the off season – whatever time of year that may be in the area we’ll be visiting – is almost always our first choice, and for that reason our experience at a particular destination may not be typical for other times of the year. The luxury to follow this strategy comes from a conscious decision to make these trips a life priority, a raison d’être, rather than just a travel holiday, and we realize that not everyone can make that commitment.  So, if you need to do your traveling during vacations from work, and are perhaps limited to specific holiday periods as a result, the differences you encounter during the high season are of special interest.

The feminine half of this partnership has certain limitations due to diabetes.  Consequently, we stay on a fairly short tether regarding access to medical care; hikes are kept fairly easy, and we snorkel rather than scuba.  Almost everything we do while on our very middle-aged two person travel vacations would be equally suitable for multi-generation family vacations, even though we don’t usually travel with children.

Our first piece of vacation planning travel advice is to plan as far in the future as possible, and fit everything else around the dates you’ve chosen.  It’s a matter of getting your priorities straight!

TTC will travel to new vacation spots in the future, but in the meantime there is plenty to do preparing more articles and photos from the list of locales above.  Our international travel didn’t begin in the Galapagos Islands, but that trip was the first to include a little device called a Canon PowerShot S110.  If not for the convenience and simplicity of the digital camera, this online travel chronicle would not exist.  More on that subject at the “Travel Photography” link above.

Please read, enjoy, ask questions, and comment if you’d like.  And let us know if you have any preference for which travelogue we work on next.

Happy Travels!
